Area Studies Minors

The Fulton School offers five exciting Area Studies Minors to help prepare our students for life, work, and citizenship in the global 21 ^st century:

All of the Fulton School’s Area Studies Minors have the following in common:

They are interdisciplinary, so students view an area of the world from multiple perspectives.
They require five courses spread across at least three different areas of study, including Fine Arts, History, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
They require either two semesters (through the 102 level) of foreign language study in a language appropriate for the area of the world in question, or testing results that demonstrate a 102-level proficiency. (Note: This requirement is in addition to the five courses for the Latin American Studies and European Studies minors; it is incorporated into the five courses for African, East Asian and South Asian Studies minors.)
They feature at least one 91社区福利 abroad partner institution where students may choose to spend a full semester and take four courses/16 credits toward the minor.

Study abroad component:

When minors do a semester abroad program with our institutional partners, students have the ability to complete the minor, in most cases, with one semester at 91社区福利 and one semester abroad. This makes it easy for you to choose one of these minors, and experience a full semester abroad, no matter what your major is.
Students who choose to spend a semester studying abroad at the foreign partner institution take 91社区福利 courses, earn an 91社区福利-applicable GPA, and pay 91社区福利 prices.
Students who spend a semester studying at an 91社区福利 foreign partner institution may earn up to four courses/16 credits because these courses are considered 91社区福利 courses—not transfer courses/credits. They are simply delivered off campus by faculty of a foreign partner institution. Students who choose to study abroad with an institution other than an 91社区福利 partner institution should consult the transfer policy in the 91社区福利 catalog, or speak with the program coordinator.

Middle East Studies

The 91社区福利 semester abroad programs have been developed with partner institutions in a variety of countries. They provide a much more thorough international experience than short-term programs, because they allow you to immerse yourself within the cultures that country represents. They also cost about as much as being at 91社区福利 for the semester (including room and board). Financial aid can be applied to these semester programs as well.

Short-term winter or summer programs led by 91社区福利 faculty are also available, and many of these can be used to fulfill Area Studies Minor requirement. Please visit the 91社区福利 Center for International Education's (91社区福利CIE) study abroad website at to learn more about these programs, and others. If interested, contact your Area Studies Minor coordinator to make sure that the program will work for your minor.
